The new German machine with a swivelling spindle is the Reinecker RS 500, which uses high-speed orthogonal peel grinding to quickly and accurately process parts. Available in the UK from IMTS Ltd, Rochester (Tel: 01634 844477), the RS 500's high cutting speed reduces the high passive forces (contact pressure) that would normally occur, thereby allowing large amounts of stock to be removed in one pass even on parts with small cross-sections. The RS 500 0D grinder is equipped with two water-cooled and automatically balanced grinding spindles for roughing and finishing operations - all in a single set-up. The contouring capability of the machine also enables it to produce both bevels and radii.

    The specification of the RS 500 includes axis travels I of 270, 270 and 550mm in the X, Y and Z axes respectively, a positioning accuracy of 0.0001 mm in all axes, a maximum CBN wheel diameter of 350mm and a main spindle rated at 11 kW. With grinding spindles able to operate at up to 7,500rev/min and the work spindle capable of running at a top speed of 3,000 rev/min, the machine can grind at cutting speeds up to 140m/sec. With regard to programming, the Numrotoplus system provides the operator with a number, of specialised cycles that simplify program writing; it also simulates the grinding process.
